Shira Route & Summit Crater Experience

Two nights at Itikoni Camp. Seven nights on Kilimanjaro. One extraordinary night inside the summit crater.

Climb Kilimanjaro the Way It Was Meant to Be

A group of hikers walking through a dense forest trail with lush green foliage on both sides.

For us, climbing Kilimanjaro isn't simply about standing on the summit.

It's about taking the time to experience the mountain properly, walking through ancient rainforest, crossing the vast Shira Plateau, sleeping beneath glaciers and reaching Uhuru Peak safely with the support of an exceptional team.

After nearly 40 years operating in Tanzania, we've refined what we believe is one of the finest Kilimanjaro itineraries available.

Beginning with two nights at our exclusive Itikoni Camp, nestled within the forests of Arusha National Park, you'll start acclimatising before you even set foot on Kilimanjaro. Combined with our carefully paced Shira Route and unforgettable overnight stay in the summit crater, this itinerary offers outstanding acclimatisation and extraordinary scenery.

This is Kilimanjaro at its very best.

Day-by-day

Days 1 & 2 — Arrive in Tanzania

Your adventure begins at our beautiful Itikoni Camp, tucked away amongst the forests on the slopes of Mount Meru.

Rather than rushing straight onto Kilimanjaro, we spend two nights here allowing your body to begin adjusting to the altitude while recovering from international travel.

Enjoy gentle forest walks, wildlife encounters and spectacular views towards Mount Meru before meeting your guides for a full expedition briefing and equipment check.

This slower start makes a remarkable difference to both your comfort and your chances of reaching the summit.

Day 3 — Into the Forest

Leaving Itikoni, we drive to Kilimanjaro National Park before beginning our ascent through magnificent montane rainforest.

Towering trees draped in moss, colourful birds and playful black-and-white colobus monkeys accompany us as we gradually climb into the Hagenia forest.

After several hours walking, we emerge onto the edge of the vast Shira Plateau and settle into camp beneath the mountain.

Day 4 — Across the Shira Plateau

Today we traverse one of Africa's most spectacular high-altitude landscapes.

The Shira Plateau is one of Kilimanjaro's hidden treasures, an ancient volcanic caldera filled with open moorland, giant heathers and sweeping views across the mountain.

Because relatively few climbers use this route, it often feels wonderfully wild and remote.

Day 5 — Towards the Southern Glaciers

As we gain height, the landscape changes dramatically.

The vegetation becomes sparse, replaced by volcanic rock, towering cliffs and distant glaciers.

We continue our gradual ascent, allowing plenty of time for acclimatisation while enjoying ever-changing views of Kilimanjaro's southern face.

Day 6 — The Great Barranco Valley

One of the most beautiful camps on Kilimanjaro awaits.

Nestled beneath the imposing Breach Wall, Barranco Camp offers extraordinary scenery and another important acclimatisation day.

An afternoon walk amongst the giant senecios helps prepare us for the days ahead.

Day 7 — Barafu Camp

Today's route takes us over the famous Breakfast Wall before continuing towards Barafu Camp.

Rather than feeling rushed, our carefully planned itinerary allows time to rest, hydrate and prepare for the summit.

Day 8 — Into the Summit Crater

Unlike almost every other Kilimanjaro itinerary, we don't rush for the summit under the cover of darkness.

Instead, we make a steady daytime climb to the crater rim before entering Kilimanjaro's remarkable summit crater.

Here we establish camp beside the Furtwängler Glacier, surrounded by towering ice walls and volcanic landscapes unlike anywhere else on Earth.

Very few climbers ever experience this extraordinary place.

As the sun sets behind Mount Meru far below, you'll enjoy one of the most memorable evenings Africa has to offer.

Day 9 — Uhuru Peak

After breakfast, we make the short climb to Uhuru Peak.

Because we're already camped inside the crater, the final ascent is far shorter than on traditional routes, allowing you to reach Africa's highest point in daylight, often with far fewer people around.

Take time to enjoy the summit before beginning your descent to Mweka Camp through changing landscapes and vegetation zones.

Day 10 — Return to Arusha

After breakfast, descend through rainforest to the park gate where you'll receive your summit certificate and say farewell to your incredible mountain crew.

Return to Arusha for a well-earned shower, celebratory meal and one final evening reflecting on an unforgettable journey.

Why Choose this Route?

Rather than arriving in Tanzania and immediately beginning the climb, this expedition starts with two nights at Itikoni Camp on the slopes of Mount Meru.

The time allows you to recover from international travel, begin adjusting naturally to altitude and settle into the rhythm of the expedition.

Gentle forest walks, an equipment check and time with your guides ensure you arrive on Kilimanjaro rested and prepared.

From Itikoni, the expedition follows our signature Shira journey into Kilimanjaro's summit crater and onwards to Uhuru Peak.
