More Than a Day Trip

You do not need a two-week safari to experience something extraordinary in Tanzania.

From Arusha, African Environments offers privately guided day experiences that take you into national parks, onto the slopes of Kilimanjaro and through landscapes shaped by volcanoes, wildlife and generations of local knowledge.

These are not rigid group tours. Your day is led by an experienced safari guide and shaped around the experience itself. Walk through forest with an armed ranger, sit beneath an acacia tree for lunch, explore a volcanic crater with a Maasai escort or travel high onto Kilimanjaro's Shira Plateau.

For guests arriving before a safari, spending extra time in Arusha or simply wanting to see another side of northern Tanzania, a single day can become one of the most memorable parts of the journey.

Choose Your Day Experience

  • Group of hikers walking on a trail in a forest, one person holding a pole above the head in celebration, others smiling and carrying backpacks and hiking sticks.

Arusha National Park Walks & Bush Lunches

Explore one of northern Tanzania's lesser-visited national parks on foot with an experienced guide and armed park ranger. Walk through forest trails and wildlife habitat with the possibility of seeing colobus monkeys, birds, buffalo and other wildlife.

Hikes can range from approximately one to three hours and can be tailored to the group's fitness and schedule. Finish with a beautifully prepared bush lunch beside a scenic waterfall before returning to Arusha.

  • Group of hikers walking through a lush, green forest with large backpacks and trekking poles.

    Kilimanjaro Shira Plateau Day Hike

Experience Mount Kilimanjaro without attempting the summit. Drive from Arusha to the western side of the mountain before climbing by 4x4 through changing vegetation to the Shira Plateau.

From around 3,400 metres, walk across open moorland with an armed ranger and mountain guide. On clear days, the summit rises dramatically above the plateau while Mount Meru can be seen across the plains.

A picnic lunch is enjoyed on the mountain before descending and returning to Arusha.

  • A group of diverse tourists walking through a lush green field with an Maasai guide leading them. The Maasai guide is dressed traditionally in red and black textile, holding a staff, and smiling. The tourists are wearing casual outdoor clothing and hats, and are following in a line under a partly cloudy sky.

Crater Walk, Maasai Experience & Bush Lunch

Travel south from Arusha by 4x4 before following a scenic off-road track to the base of an extinct volcanic crater. Here, meet your Maasai escort and choose between two walking experiences.

The crater rim walk climbs a few hundred feet and circles the rim for panoramic views. Alternatively, descend to the grassy, wooded crater floor and visit a sacred room-sized boulder surrounded by Maasai stories and traditions.

After the walk, continue to a nearby private farm for traditional Maasai dancing and a beading demonstration, with the opportunity to try making your own piece. Finish beneath a shaded acacia tree with a bush lunch, soft drinks, wine and beer.

  • A person sitting on the roof of a safari vehicle using a remote control, with multiple safari vehicles and trees in the background, under a cloudy sky at sunset.

    Tarangire National Park Day Safari

Leave Arusha early and travel south to Tarangire National Park, a landscape of ancient baobab trees, open savannah and the Tarangire River.

The park is particularly famous for its elephants, with large herds gathering around the river and surrounding habitats. Spend the day game viewing with your private guide, searching for wildlife and exploring the park at your own pace.

Enjoy lunch during the day before continuing your game drive and returning to Arusha.

Designed Around the Experience

The best days rarely feel rushed.

African Environments has spent decades guiding guests through northern Tanzania, and our day experiences draw on that same knowledge, flexibility and understanding of place.

Some days are about wildlife. Others are about walking. Sometimes the most memorable part is sitting beneath a tree after lunch, talking with your guide about Tanzania, its people and the landscapes you've spent the morning exploring.

Our experiences can be adapted around fitness levels, interests and available time. For some guests, a day walk is a chance to stretch their legs between safari drives. For others, it is an introduction to Tanzania before a longer journey begins.

Whatever you choose, the aim is simple: to give you enough time, space and expert guidance to genuinely enjoy where you are.
