Kilimanjaro via the Shira Route
Our signature Kilimanjaro climb. A quieter, carefully paced journey across the Shira Plateau, through the Western Breach and into the summit crater.
Climb Kilimanjaro Differently
There are many ways to climb Africa's highest mountain. Some operators focus on reaching the summit as quickly as possible. We believe Kilimanjaro deserves far more than that.
For almost 40 years, African Environments has been leading expeditions across Tanzania's wild places. We've learnt that the best adventures aren't measured by speed, but by the memories you make, the people you meet and the time you take to truly experience the mountain.
Our signature Shira Route is our favourite way to climb Kilimanjaro because it offers excellent acclimatisation, quieter trails, spectacular scenery and something very few climbers ever experience: a night spent inside Kilimanjaro's summit crater beside the Furtwängler Glacier.
Rather than joining hundreds of climbers leaving camp at midnight, you'll climb into the crater during daylight, sleep beneath towering ice walls and make the final ascent to Uhuru Peak after breakfast.
It's a completely different experience. And we think it's the very best way to discover Kilimanjaro.

Day-by-day
Day 1 — Into the Rainforest
Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Arusha to the western side of Kilimanjaro National Park.
Setting off on foot, you'll enter ancient montane rainforest where towering trees, tangled vines and colourful birdlife surround the trail. Black-and-white colobus monkeys are frequently seen leaping through the canopy, while elephant tracks often remind us that this remains true wilderness.
The gentle pace allows everyone to settle into the expedition while your guides introduce you to the mountain that will be your home for the coming week.
Tonight, you'll camp surrounded by forest beneath a blanket of stars.
Day 2 — Across the Shira Plateau
Today's walk reveals just how dramatically Kilimanjaro changes with altitude.
The rainforest gradually gives way to giant heathers before opening onto the vast Shira Plateau, one of the oldest volcanic calderas on Earth and now recognised as part of the mountain's UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The landscape feels wonderfully remote. Huge skies stretch in every direction while Kibo's summit rises dramatically ahead.
This quieter western approach is one of the reasons we love this route so much.
Day 3 — Moir Valley
Cross the rolling landscapes of the Shira Plateau towards Moir Camp.
Along the way you'll discover Kilimanjaro's unique high-altitude plant life, including giant lobelias, towering senecios and everlasting flowers that survive in this extraordinary environment.
Your camp sits on a rocky bluff with spectacular views across the plateau.
An optional afternoon acclimatisation walk provides further preparation for the higher elevations to come.
Day 4 — Lava Tower
Today's route climbs steadily into Kilimanjaro's alpine desert.
The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as ancient lava flows and volcanic formations dominate the landscape.
Passing beneath the dramatic Shark's Tooth formation, you'll arrive beneath the impressive Lava Tower.
From camp you'll enjoy your first uninterrupted views of the spectacular Western Breach.
Day 5 — Arrow Glacier Camp
A shorter day takes you steadily towards Arrow Glacier.
The route offers ever-expanding views across northern Tanzania. After reaching camp, you'll enjoy another short acclimatisation walk before returning to relax with hot drinks and an early dinner.
Your guides continue their careful health checks, ensuring everyone is well prepared for the climb ahead.
Day 6 — Into the Summit Crater
Today is one of the most memorable mountain days anywhere in Africa.
Following the spectacular Western Breach, you'll make a steady ascent to Kilimanjaro's summit crater.
While the route requires concentration, it is non-technical and your experienced guides will support you every step of the way.
Upon reaching the crater rim, you'll enter an extraordinary world of glaciers, volcanic ash and vast open skies.
If conditions allow, there is time to explore the famous Ash Pit before settling into your unique high camp beside the towering ice walls of the Furtwängler Glacier.
Very few people ever spend a night here.
Day 7 — Uhuru Peak
Unlike every other route on Kilimanjaro, there is no midnight alarm.
Enjoy breakfast at camp before making the short climb to Uhuru Peak in daylight.
Without the exhaustion of an overnight summit push, you'll have time to truly appreciate standing on the highest point in Africa.
After celebrating your achievement and taking in the extraordinary views, begin your descent through Barafu before continuing to Mweka Camp.
Day 8 — Back to the Forest
A final morning walk through lush rainforest brings you back to the park gate, where you'll receive your summit certificate and say goodbye to your mountain crew.
From here we return to Arusha, where a hot shower, cold drink and well-earned celebration await.
Why Choose the Shira Route?
The Shira Route offers a slower, quieter approach to Kilimanjaro through some of the mountain's most spectacular landscapes.
Crossing the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Shira Plateau gives climbers time to acclimatise while experiencing a wilderness area far removed from the busier trails.
The route then climbs via the Western Breach before entering the summit crater. Here, you spend the night beside the Furtwängler Glacier—an experience available to very few Kilimanjaro climbers.
The following morning there is no midnight alarm. After breakfast, make the final daylight ascent to Uhuru Peak before beginning the descent towards Mweka.
