Multi-Day Walking Safari in Tanzania
Leave the vehicle behind and experience Tanzania at walking pace. Guided by African Environments' experienced walking team, this sample itinerary explores remote wilderness areas of the Serengeti while staying in lightweight mobile camps. Every walking safari is privately guided and tailored to your group, making each journey unique.
Discover Tanzania on Foot
Walking safaris offer an entirely different perspective on Tanzania. Without the distraction of vehicles, every footprint, bird call and change in the landscape becomes part of the experience. Guided by professional walking guides with decades of experience operating in Tanzania's wilderness, guests gain a deeper understanding of wildlife behaviour, ecology and the smaller details that are often missed during traditional game drives.
African Environments has been operating walking safaris for decades and was one of the pioneers of guided wilderness walking in Tanzania. Every journey is supported by experienced camp crews who move the lightweight mobile camp between locations, allowing guests to focus entirely on the experience while travelling through some of East Africa's most spectacular landscapes.
Walking distances and daily routes are adapted to suit the group, wildlife movements and seasonal conditions, making every safari unique.
Day-by-day
Day 1 – Arrival in Arusha
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport where you'll be met by your African Environments guide before transferring to your accommodation in Arusha. Meet the walking team, discuss the expedition ahead and carry out a final equipment check before travelling into the wilderness.
Day 2 – Journey to the Serengeti
Travel towards Serengeti National Park, enjoying game viewing throughout the journey before arriving at African Environments' Pembezoni Camp. Spend the evening preparing for the walking expedition while receiving a detailed briefing from your guide.
Day 3 – Into the Wilderness
Leave the vehicle behind and begin walking through designated wilderness areas of the Serengeti. Learn about animal tracks, birds, plants and the smaller details of the ecosystem while your support team establishes camp ahead of your arrival.
Day 4 – Full Day Walking Safari
Continue deeper into the wilderness, exploring kopjes, open plains, seasonal riverbeds and woodland habitats. Wildlife encounters are managed carefully by your guide, with routes chosen according to conditions and recent animal movements. Picnic lunch is taken in the field before continuing to the next wilderness campsite.
Day 5 – Wilderness Exploration
A further day on foot allows greater flexibility to explore areas inaccessible to vehicles. Time is spent tracking wildlife, observing birds, understanding ecology and experiencing the Serengeti at a slower pace. Evenings are spent around camp beneath the African night sky.
Day 6 – Return to Pembezoni Camp
Complete the final section of the walking safari before rejoining vehicles and returning to Pembezoni Camp. Enjoy a hot shower, comfortable camp facilities and a final evening reflecting on the journey.
Day 7 – Serengeti Game Viewing
Spend a final day exploring the Serengeti by vehicle, allowing opportunities to visit areas beyond the walking zones while searching for predators, elephants, giraffes and plains game.
Day 8 – Departure
Return towards Arusha by road or scheduled flight depending on onward travel arrangements.
Why Choose a Walking Safari?
Walking changes the way Tanzania is experienced. Without the constant presence of a vehicle, guests become part of the landscape rather than simply observing it. Distances are shorter, the pace is slower and every day brings opportunities to understand animal behaviour, tracks, plants and ecosystems in far greater detail.
African Environments has built its reputation on responsible wilderness walking. Experienced guides, carefully planned routes, lightweight mobile camps and decades of local knowledge combine to create a walking safari that is both safe and deeply rewarding. For many guests, walking becomes the highlight of their time in Tanzania.
Many guests choose to combine several days on foot with a traditional vehicle-based safari, creating a journey that balances exceptional wildlife viewing with immersive wilderness experiences. Walking itineraries can easily be incorporated into longer tailor-made safaris across northern Tanzania.
