Machame Route
One of Kilimanjaro's most scenic and rewarding climbs, the Machame Route combines spectacular landscapes, excellent acclimatisation and an unforgettable journey to Africa's highest summit. Beginning with two nights at our exclusive Itikoni Camp before joining the mountain, this carefully paced expedition offers exceptional support from experienced guides and a truly immersive wilderness experience.
Discover the Machame Route
Known for its remarkable scenery and varied landscapes, the Machame Route is one of Kilimanjaro's most rewarding climbs. Beginning on the mountain's southern slopes, the route passes through lush montane rainforest before climbing onto the Shira Plateau, crossing dramatic volcanic landscapes and continuing beneath Kilimanjaro's spectacular southern glaciers.
Unlike many standard itineraries, every African Environments Machame expedition begins with two nights at our exclusive Itikoni Camp, located within Arusha National Park on the slopes of Mount Meru. Here, you'll have time to recover from international travel, complete a comprehensive equipment check, meet your mountain guides and enjoy an acclimatisation hike through equatorial forest before stepping onto Kilimanjaro.
From the Shira Plateau, the route continues into the magnificent Great Barranco Valley, where towering cliffs, giant senecio forests and breathtaking mountain scenery create one of the highlights of the entire expedition. After climbing the famous Breakfast Wall and reaching Barafu Camp, you'll ascend into Kilimanjaro's summit crater, spending the night beside the Furtwängler Glacier before making the final ascent to Uhuru Peak at dawn.
Combining outstanding scenery, a carefully planned ascent and the support of one of Tanzania's most experienced mountain teams, the Machame Route offers an unforgettable journey to the Roof of Africa.
