Some journeys stay with you forever.

Beginning in the Ngorongoro Highlands, this itinerary combines exceptional wildlife viewing with genuine cultural experiences before venturing deep into the Serengeti's remote wilderness areas. Spend time with Maasai guides who know these landscapes intimately, explore one of Africa's greatest wildlife destinations at your own pace, then leave the vehicle behind to discover the Serengeti on foot.

"We love this itinerary – it has some fantastic game viewing in some of the greatest spots on earth, a chance to experience some of the unique Maasai culture and finally the jewel in the crown – walking in the Serengeti – our most favourite thing to do."

Day-by-day

Day 1 – Arrival – Moivaro Coffee Lodge, Arusha

We propose clients arrive on the evening KLM flight into Kilimanjaro International Airport from Amsterdam – it's a fairly smooth and painless way to get to Tanzania. We meet this flight and transfer guests to Moivaro Coffee Lodge for a light supper and overnight stay. Alternatively, we can arrange arrivals via Nairobi or Dar es Salaam.

Day 2 – Mysigio Luxury Camp, Ngorongoro

Drive from Arusha into the Ngorongoro Highlands where Mysigio Camp is nestled amongst the acacia forests on the southern side of the highlands. Away from the bustle of the crater rim, this is a place where the Maasai continue to live traditional lives. Explore the surrounding hills with local Maasai chief Ole Dorop, visiting villages and spectacular viewpoints overlooking the Serengeti Plains.

Day 3 – Ngorongoro Crater

Spend a full day exploring the Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa's greatest wildlife destinations. This remarkable caldera is home to an extraordinary concentration of wildlife and offers outstanding opportunities for close-up photography and unforgettable game viewing.

Day 4 – Maasai Highlands Walk

Enjoy a full day's walk with a Maasai guide and an armed ranger. Hike to the peaks of Lemagrut or choose a lower-level walk towards the Eyasi viewpoint, stopping to visit villages and meet local herders along the way. The sweeping views across the Serengeti from the Ngorongoro Highlands are among the finest in Tanzania.

Day 5 – Pembezoni Luxury Seasonal Camp, Serengeti

Descend from the Ngorongoro Highlands and journey across the vast Serengeti plains, enjoying game viewing throughout the drive. Arrive at Pembezoni Camp, African Environments' luxury seasonal camp, which moves throughout the year to remain close to the wildlife while providing comfortable accommodation, spacious mess tents and exceptional hospitality beneath the stars.

Days 6 & 7 – Exploring the Serengeti

Spend two full days exploring this extraordinary ecosystem in search of wildlife and predators. One of the Serengeti's greatest qualities is its timelessness. Here, each day is shaped by the movements of the wildlife rather than the clock, allowing you to experience one of Africa's greatest wildernesses at a relaxed pace before returning to camp each evening.

Day 8 – Into the Wilderness

Leave the game viewing tracks behind as you venture into the remote wilderness areas of the Serengeti. Rarely visited except by ranger patrols, these exclusive walking zones offer an experience of the Serengeti as it once was. After settling into the lightweight wilderness camp, enjoy an afternoon orientation walk to begin learning how to move quietly through this remarkable landscape.

Days 9 & 10 – Walking Safari

Spend two unforgettable days exploring the Serengeti on foot. Walking here is not about covering long distances but about slowing down and experiencing the landscape through every sense. Watch wildlife from rocky kopjes, pause beneath shady trees for lunch, and discover the smaller details of the ecosystem that are so easily missed from a vehicle. With exclusive access to these wilderness areas, you won't encounter another visitor throughout the experience.

Day 11 – Return to Arusha

Enjoy an early morning walk before a hearty breakfast and the drive back across the Serengeti to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon in time to connect with an evening departure flight.

Why Choose This Safari?

This itinerary perfectly captures what makes African Environments different. Rather than simply moving between famous parks, it balances exceptional wildlife viewing with meaningful cultural encounters and true wilderness exploration. From walking with Maasai guides in the Ngorongoro Highlands to spending exclusive time on foot in the Serengeti's protected wilderness areas, every stage of the journey offers a deeper connection to Tanzania's landscapes, wildlife and people.

Travelling with African Environments also means staying in camps owned and operated by the company itself. With experienced guides, flexible daily planning and decades of local knowledge, every safari is shaped around the conditions on the ground rather than a rigid timetable.
