Serengeti Migration Guide

The Great Migration: Serengeti’s Greatest Wildlife Spectacle

The Great Migration is one of the most extraordinary wildlife events on Earth.

Every year, more than two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles move across the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grass and water. Predators follow closely behind, creating dramatic wildlife encounters that have captivated explorers, photographers, and safari lovers for generations.

At African Environments, our guides have been following the migration for nearly 40 years. Understanding these movements — and knowing where to be at the right time — is what makes the difference between simply seeing wildlife and experiencing something truly unforgettable.

January – March: Calving Season

In the southern Serengeti and Ndutu region, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest gather to give birth.

Thousands of calves are born each day, creating an incredible spectacle of new life — and attracting predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas.

April – June: The Journey Begins

As the rains fade, the herds begin their long journey north.

Massive columns of animals move across the plains, sometimes stretching for kilometres. River crossings in the western Serengeti can create thrilling moments as crocodiles wait in the waters.

July – October: Mara River Crossings

Perhaps the most dramatic phase of the migration occurs when the herds reach the northern Serengeti and must cross the Mara River.

These crossings are unpredictable, chaotic, and unforgettable — thousands of animals plunging into crocodile-filled waters in a desperate attempt to reach fresh grazing.

November – December: Returning South

With the arrival of the short rains, the herds begin their journey back toward the southern Serengeti.

The cycle begins again.

Experiencing the Migration the Right Way

The Serengeti can become busy during peak migration periods, but African Environments specialises in designing safaris that avoid crowds.

Our private camps, including Pembezoni Camp, are carefully located to maximise wildlife access while maintaining a true wilderness atmosphere.

Combined with our experienced guides and flexible itineraries, this allows guests to experience the migration in a more intimate and authentic way.

For us, the migration is not just a spectacle — it is part of a living ecosystem we have been exploring for decades.
