Best Time to See the Great Migration in Tanzania

The Great Migration is one of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles on Earth. Each year, more than two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle move across the vast plains of the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grazing.

For many travellers, witnessing the migration is the dream that brings them to Tanzania.

But one of the most common questions we hear is: when is the best time to see it?

Understanding the Migration

The migration is not a single event that happens on one specific date. Instead, it is a continuous, year-round movement of animals following seasonal rainfall and grass growth across the Serengeti and Maasai Mara ecosystem.

Because the herds are always moving, the best time to see them depends on where you are in the Serengeti and what type of wildlife experience you hope to witness.

Key Migration Moments

January – March: Calving Season
In the southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest gather to give birth. This is an incredible time to visit, with newborn animals everywhere and predators close behind.

April – June: Moving North
As the rains shift, the herds begin moving north through the central Serengeti.

July – October: River Crossings
This is when the famous river crossings take place as animals attempt to cross crocodile-filled rivers in the northern Serengeti.

November – December: Return South
The migration begins moving back toward the southern plains to begin the cycle again.

Seeing the Migration the Right Way

While the migration is spectacular, some areas can become busy during peak river crossing months.

At African Environments, our philosophy is always to balance incredible wildlife viewing with a more peaceful wilderness experience.

With nearly 40 years of guiding experience, our team knows how to position safaris to maximise wildlife encounters while avoiding the busiest routes whenever possible.

Our private wilderness camps also allow guests to stay closer to the action while maintaining a sense of quiet immersion in the landscape.

Safari With African Environments

For us, safari is about more than just seeing animals.

It’s about experiencing the Serengeti in a way that respects the landscape, supports local communities, and allows guests to connect deeply with nature.

As a family-owned company, we believe in running safaris responsibly — with sustainable camps, fair wages for our staff, and guides who truly care about sharing Tanzania’s extraordinary wildlife.

Witnessing the Great Migration with experienced guides in a quiet corner of the Serengeti is an experience that stays with you forever.
