8 day "Donkeys to Lake Eyasi" (Dry/Wet Season)

On this unique trip camp is carried by Maasai donkeys rather than vehicles. Although the camp is even lighter and the trip is a bit rougher, it gets you into remote Africa and you visit three very different cultural groups. Walking is mixed with vehicle game viewing.

Day 1: Ngorongoro Crater Serena Lodge. Drive from Arusha into the Ngorongoro Crater Highlands and stay on the rim of the Crater

Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater Serena Lodge. Full day in Ngorongoro Crater. In the morning we will descend the 2000 foot Crater in our 4-wheel-drive vehicle and spend the day exploring the floor of the 12 mile wide Crater. Ngorongoro wildlife populations are resident year round and are particularly good for photographing as they are well habituated. We will have a picnic lunch and ascend back up to our lodge in the late afternoon.

Day 3: Oldeani Mountain Camp One. From the lodge on the Crater rim we will drive to the base of Oldeani Mountain and hike up to our Mountain camp, 3-5 hour. The campsite has stunning views to the west of our route down to Lake Eyasi in the Rift Valley Escarpment. On this day we will meet our Donkey support team and the Maasai herdsmen who will help us move down the mountain.

Day 4: Mti Moja, Camp two (mountain camp). In the morning get our loads loaded on the donkeys. The walk is 4-6 hours hiking through the spectacular mountains vegetation. We will follow wildlife and donkey trails down the mountain and camp at Mti Moja or "the big tree" camp.

Day 5: Upper Endabaga River, Camp three (mountain camp). Again we pack up the donkeys for another day of travel down the mountain. We hike for a full day and finally find camp near the river in the forest.

Day 6: Lower Endabaga River, Camp four (Luxury Camp). We say goodbye to our donkey crew and drive to our Luxury Camp which will have been set up near Lake Eyasi. After a hot shower and a cold drink we can walk a short distance to visit the Wahadzabe, one of the last Hunter gather tribes in East Africa.

Day 7: Lower Endabaga River, Camp five (Luxury Camp). Spend a full day visiting and walking with the Wahadzabe tribesmen. Help them stalk wildlife, search for edible roots, or scoop honey from a tree.

Day 8: Drive 5 hours back to Arusha
