Lightweight Wilderness Camp

Over the years our lightweight camps have gradually evolved into their present form and offer a fine balance of comfort and mobility. The camps are designed to provide the maximum comfort for the minimum bulk – with the key proviso that it must be possible for the camp crew to break the camp down, drive it to a new location, and put it up again ... in one day.

Other design parameters were that we must be able to fit a camp for 7 people in one of our 4x4 pickups – without a trailer. The lack of trailer was essential for these camps to be able to reach some of the remote spots that we like to get it to! The whole camp had to be serviced by the camp crew, cook and camp supervisor. Other complications have been devising a menu that is as mouth-wateringly delicious as our other camps but that is faster and easier to prepare for a cook who has spent the bulk of the day moving camp! There also had to be sufficient room left to carry food and water for everyone for three nights.

The result has been domed sleeping tents with standing headroom in the middle, aluminium framed cots with mattresses, duvets and pillows. Separate toilet and shower tents that are shared between tents. We retained a large airy bug screened mess tent and sit down waiter served meals and a kitchen tent. The whole camp is powered by solar lighting with a backup pressure lights for area lighting.

This camp is perfect for those who relish the remote places that Africa has to offer, getting off the beaten track and into the wilds. We have used it extensively for our walking safaris in the Ngorongoro Conservation areas and the Serengeti National Park as well as for travellers wanting to get closer to nature. It’s also popular with film crews and student groups as it offers an affordable, flexible alternative.

It offers an unparalleled balance between the ability to reach almost any location, being able to move in one day and a high degree of comfort. As with all our camps the full board price includes cooked breakfast, sumptuous picnic lunches and a full sit down evening meal with wine and beer. The remote locations we visit are often fragile environments and our crew are well trained and practiced in utilizing ‘leave no trace’ camouflage camping techniques.
