Risk Management and Crisis Response

What are your guides trained to do in emergency situations? How do you respond to support their efforts? Are you prepared to break the news of tragedy to a client’s family at home? What resources to you have in place to improve outcomes? These are common questions tour operators, program managers, Lodge Managers and many other supervisory/management level personnel have.

With these questions in mind, Aerie Backcountry Medicine has joined forces with African Environments to offer a first-of-its-kind course specifically designed for company supervisors, managers, and owners with specific accent on operations in East Africa.

This 3 day course entitled, Risk Management and Crisis Response provides an overview of necessary medical skills and knowledge to administer first aid where there is no immediate access to help.
But this is NOT just another first aid course! This course is designed to assist managers in:

  • Developing better accident and illness prevention strategies,
  • Providing evacuation guidelines and criteria for staff in the field,
  • Setup and activation of evacuation plans,
  • Coordinating and managing time and resources effectively during a crisis,
  • Developing the confidence and experience required in today’s litigious world to be able to make the right call at the right time,
  • Developing strategies to train and manage staff in emergency preparedness,
  • Developing improved skills to deal with crisis, challenging client situations, and fatalities.
  • Determining the needs of individualized, program specific, first aid kits,
  • Understanding basic assessment and care strategies for a wide array of injuries and illnesses from immediate needs trough extended or postponed evacuations,
  • And, a basic understanding of improvised splints, stretchers, and other available technologies to aid emergency response.

Successful participants will become certified in Wilderness Medicine Essentials, adult and child Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and  Risk Management and Crisis Response

Aerie Backcountry Medicine, an American organization, has been teaching guides and managers alike for over 15 years in the latest emergency response techniques. Aerie has worked with guide services around the world and has provided training for the United States government to improve their emergency response and crisis management in National Parks. Aerie will be flying over their Assistant Director, Peter Anderson, from the US. Peter Anderson, an emergency and critical care transport nurse, has also worked as a professional mountain guide around the world and has worked as a hunting guide in South Africa. His up-to-date knowledge, real-world approach, and management experience with Aerie make him a great asset for this course.
