There are endless possible game viewing safari itineraries depending on your interests and the amount of time you have. Following are just a few of the most popular itineraries that we run. 5 Night Camping and Lodge Safari: This is a short safari that combines easily with other activities such as a Kilimanjaro Climb or a Walking Safari. This trip takes you to the best of Tanzanian Northern Parks. 5 Night Camping Only Safari: This trip is similar to the above, but expands on the unique experience of luxury camping in the National Parks. On this entire trip sleep in the bush, enjoy the African sky and night sounds. 8 Night Camping and Lodge Safari: If you have a bit more time, get a more thorough look at the Northern Parks and their unique environments. On this trip you have plenty of time to both enjoy camping and lodges. This trip works well with a Kilimanjaro Climb if you have three weeks available, or you can attach a shorter excursion to your safari. Planning your tripYour Safari itinerary should be customized to the amount of time you have and the time of year you are visiting. Although Tanzania is on the equator there are very distinct seasonal weather patterns. June - October ("dry season") it is usually overcast and relatively cool (ie 60's at night). This is traditionally the "high season" for tourists visiting Tanzania. October to early December is usually extremely dry and dusty and not the most popular time for safari however a good time to climb Kilimanjaro. November-December. The short rains which typically start late Nov/Dec settle the dust, clear the atmosphere and usually turn the plains green again. December-March ("green season") is a great time for safari and is considered the "2nd high season." During this time of year the plains are green and full of wildlife, however the sun shines hot. April-May is the monsoon. Although this sounds like a bad time to visit it is actually very beautiful: the plains are green and the parks are relatively empty. You will encounter some rain and muc, but you will also encounter cool days and warm sunshine. Certain National parks are "best" to visit at certain times of the year. July to November is best in Tarangire National Park because it is very dry else where and the animals congregate around the Tarangire River, a year round water supply running through the Park. During this period we also visit the Central Serengeti as there is a permanent river there as well. From Jan through May the Great Wildebeest Migration, a million strong, is moving around the southern Serengeti. This is a spectacle that should not be missed if you are on safari during this time. By mid Feb the wildebeest are calving which is also very exciting. Most our safaris in this time period are focused around the Serengeti migration. Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara National Park are good places to visit in any season as these areas have permanent water sources and therefore, resident wildlife populations. |
